Stabilization involves the application of robust motion tracking to an image stream in order to synthesize a smooth virtual camera path.
This can be performed in real-time on an existing off-the-shelf laptop and can be applied to the live video stream from a connected camera or offline to captured imagery. Edge-filling can also be performed to reduce the visual impact of any cropping of the image during the stabilization process.
In comparison to the built-in stabilization offered by a typical consumer level DV camera, 2d3 are able to achieve greater stabilization of larger and more varied motions. Where a typical consumer camera might offer a few pixels horizontal and vertical shift in order to correct motion, 2d3's real time stabilization process calculates the full virtual translation of the camera and its rotation about the optic axis and can cover tens or even hundreds of pixels if necessary in order to generate a stabilized stream.
Industrial, Government and Defense
For industrial or Government applications such a capability can be applied to reduce cost, payload weight and volume by eliminating the need for gyro-stabilised camera mounting, potentially offering greater UAV range and endurance.
If necessary, the processing could be applied offline to eliminate any need for an on-board processing payload.
Even in situations where mechanical gyro-stabilization is used, if the target is at great distance and viewed through a narrow angle lens, a mechanical system will typically fail to remove all vibration on the platform and some residual image instability will remain. 2d3's stabilization is complementary to mechanical stabilization in these circumstances and such a combination would allow the use of a less highly specified and therefore lower cost mechanical system.
